The Jewish Wedding Crashers

One of the more popular films of 2005 was the comedy hit "The Wedding Crashers". It related the antics of two bachelors who crashed weddings in the hope of meeting eligible women.

Jewish tradition also deals with the issue of unexpected wedding guests, but of a highly different nature.

A brief look at the three types of visitors who might "crash" a Jewish wedding provides wonderful insight into the law and lore of Jewish values, as well as a profound understanding of the Jewish wedding itself.

The three unexpected "crashers" include departed
souls, the Creator, and the poor and needy.

While conventional texts of Jewish law make almost no mention of afterlife, according to the Zohar, the classic work of Jewish mysticism, souls of departed ancestorsm may well be present at the wedding.

It writes: "Even though his (the groom's) father and mother have departed from this world, they participate in every 'simcha'(joyous occasion). The Holy One, Blessed Be He, goes to the Garden of Eden and takes the groom's father and mother, who are partners with the Creator (in giving birth to the groom) and brings them along with Him to the simcha.
And all of them are present but the people are
unaware."

Other opinions go so far as to say that even the grandparents and great grandparents are present as well.

What's so remarkable about this passage is not only that the souls of the departed participate in the wedding, but the Creator, Himself, takes them by the hand, so to speak, and personally escorts them to the wedding. And, as if this were not enough, the Creator too is a guest at every wedding!

Being the skeptic and rationalist that I am , I never placed much faith in this idea until the birth of my youngest son, eleven years ago.

Several months before he was born my mother passed away.

When we conducted his "brit milah" (circumcision) eight days after his birth, as is traditionally done, I had the strangest feeling that my deceased mother was amongst the celebrants.

I can't explain it, but I felt her presence near. I had never experienced that feeling prior to this event, nor have I since. But I'm convinced, on that special morning, she was with us.

The third type of Jewish wedding crashers I've become accustomed to see are more prevalent in Israel than in America. These are those whom the Kabbalah refers to as society's "broken vessels". The poor, the hungry, and the homeless.

At my own wedding, twenty six years ago in New York, the planning of seating arrangements was a major undertaking. Taking care to make sure that each guest was seated with the right people, required
considerable thought and sensitivity. Every table and chair was carefully accounted for.

In Israel, where I've lived for the last twenty five years, weddings are much more informal.

Usually there is not reserved seating. Guests tend to sit wherever they feel comfortable.It is not uncommon at Israeli weddings for a number of uninvited guests to also attend. These include the indigent and the less fortunate members of society.

Jewish law is very explicit in it's demands that the wedding feast is not complete unless such guests are present and seated. The groom himself must take special care to personally attend to these guests and show them honor and appreciation. He must do his utmost to make them feel welcome.

In reward for such behavior the bride and groom are assured a life of happiness and blessing.

So the next time you attend a simcha, look for the Jewish wedding crashers. These are the departed souls, the Creator, and the poor and needy.

And if you, like I, initially have difficulty finding them, don't despair.

For when you witness the hungry and homeless leaving the wedding hall, their handbags filled with rolls and overflowing with food... you'll know for certain that the first two "crashers" are also present.

And you will understand why the Creator, who takes particular pleasure seeing His needy children fed and cared for (especially by the bride and groom, on this, their wedding night) personally escorts the souls of the proud, departed parents, to witness their precious children's wedding.

WEDDING CRASHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Have you ever crashed a wedding before? If so, how did your event go about?

I've never crashed but my wedding had a couple...one guy I asked outright to dance with me (keep in mind I was the bride). While we were dancing I asked him who he was and who he knew (turns out he knew no one) then I asked him how he liked dinner and the bar and by the end of the song he felt so guilty he handed my husband 50 dollars and him and his friend left. we had a few others crash as well but they knew guests that were there and just kind of invited themselves and since there was so much left over food we didn't care about that but we did have to change the night to cash bar when it got really late b/c there were just too many people there we didn't know.

MGS2 Substance is the update of the best-selling Metal Gear Solid 2: Song of Liberty for the Playstation 2. So what actually is MGS2 Substance? It is basically a repackages, updated and improved version of Metal Gear Solid 2. In addition to this, there are also around 200 extra training missions that are set in different areas from the game (mainly in the plant chapter). This is the main draw for people looking to buy MGS2 Substance, and this really is the main draw for gamers that thought that there wasn't enough action in the main part of the game.

One of the more quirky additions to the game is skateboarding game, where Snake take's to the four-wheeled board 'Tony Hawk's' style, in an attempt to battle his way through a different set of obstacles.

Valentine’s Day – the Full Circle of Traditions

The history and importance of Valentine’s Day will become more than evident this February 14th, with widespread gestures of affection, hope and love. With so much pessimism and bad news in the world today, Valentine’s Day is a welcome opportunity to bring optimism, hope and love to the forefront of our minds. But with so much commercialism attached to many religious festivals and national days of importance, it is easy to overlook the history, meaning and importance of Valentine’s Day. How did this day originate, and why are Roman images of Cupid associated strongly with a Christian Saint, at a time of importance to Pagan traditions?

Of the many millions who will be celebrating, or taking the opportunity to make tentative moves, or even propose this February 14th, there is no doubt that many faiths will be represented, and many who have no particular faith at all. Perhaps because the concept of love is at the heart of this occasion, there is barely a soul on earth who cannot appreciate its relevance. But beyond the commercialism, the expensive cards, the hand-tied bouquets and the luxury boxes of chocolates, Valentine’s has a mixed and fascinating history, and even the truth about who Valentine really was is shrouded in much speculation and myth.

The origins of this day lie in pagan times, although Valentine’s Day has seen a remarkable transition from pagan tradition to religious festival, and from religious festival to a day of national celebration – some might argue, of commercial celebration. For most of us, wherever we live in the world, and whatever our beliefs, February 14th has a long standing reputation for being a day of romance and of love. In some cases this is seen as being the love of one person for another in a romantic way, but elsewhere Valentine’s Day is seen more as an opportunity to make small gestures towards friends.

February 14th used to be a Roman custom, very much within the pagan tradition. It was the Eve of Lupercalia, and was primarily a festival of fertility. The tradition in Rome was to hold what was effectively a lottery, where boys and girls were paired off with each other at random. Many of these pairings evolved into firm friendships and even marriages. Throughout the following days of the feast other pagan traditions of a less romantic bent would be carried out, including ritual sacrifices, bathing in blood, and whipping in the streets.

Needless to say, when the Catholic Church stepped in, many of these traditions were stopped, and although the love lottery survived, boys were paired with saints rather than girls, and this is when Saint Valentine became synonymous with the date.

It isn’t easy to be clear who exactly Valentine was, since there are eleven different Saint Valentines recorded by the Catholic Church. However, three in particular stand out, two of which are thought to be the most likely contenders. The first of these St Valentines was a Christian Priest who was executed on February 14th in 269 AD. The emperor of Rome at the time, Claudius II had passed a law banning marriage, because a significant number of men were getting married as a way to avoid the obligation which they would otherwise face of joining the army. St Valentine carried out many secret marriages however, and during the time when he was waiting to be executed, many romantic couples sent him letters in support of love over war. It was in 496 AD that Pope Gelasius decreed that February 14th should be set as a day to honour him – neatly converting the pagan traditions into a Catholic celebration.

The other possible St Valentine was also a priest who was imprisoned for helping Christians. Whilst imprisoned he fell in love with the daughter of his jailer, with his many secret notes and letters being signed ‘from your Valentine’. He was eventually beheaded.

But how did this religious celebration become so associated with romantic love, and far less associated with religion, or Saint Valentine himself? The most likely moment when romance became associated is in 1381 when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem in honour of the engagement between Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia. This poem, entitled ‘The Parliament of Fowls’ is the first known case of linking engagement, the mating season and Saint Valentine’s together, and may well have caused the increased importance and romantic connotations we see today.

Roughly a billion Valentines cards are sent each year – the vast majority of these being sent by women. The first known Valentine card was sent about 35 years after Chaucer wrote his poem. This card was sent by the Duke of Orleans to his wife during his imprisonment at the Tower of London in 1415. Another 80 years later King Henry VIII declared February 14th to be St Valentine’s Day by Royal Charter.

However, today the only religious associations still upheld are the original pagan ones, with modern day Wicca still enjoying the opportunity to celebrate love and fertility, although with rather less blood and whipping than in Roman times! The Feast of Lupercalia is still celebrated by many modern followers of Wicca, and although the sending of Valentine’s cards may not be a traditional pagan tradition, many followers of various branches of modern Wicca do send gifts, cards or tokens of affection. However, it is viewed very much as being of greater value if sent anonymously, as with charitable donations.

The Catholic church decided to remove Valentine’s Day from its liturgical calendar in 1969, since when it has no longer been recognised as a religious celebration at all – the occasion has come full circle it seems, though not without a generous helping of fascinating traditions and associations – not to mention much commercialism too.

Many of the traditions we associate with February 14th may well be pagan in origin, but there is much variety nationally, and even regionally. For example, in some parts of Europe, such as the United Kingdom and Italy, the tradition is for women to get up early, before sunrise, and watch through the window. The belief, or at least the tradition, is that the first man they see will be the man they will marry within the year. In some regions this idea has been watered down slightly, possibly due to the limit in the number of available milkmen and postmen, with the belief that the first man seen through the window will look similar to the man they will marry.

Elsewhere in Europe, such as in Denmark, snowdrops are pressed and sent to close friends. Another tradition is to send a Valentine’s Day card, but to replace the letters of the sender’s name with dots – one dot per letter of the name. Should the recipient correctly guess who the sender is from this clue, then the sender should reward their Valentine with an egg at Easter.

Surprisingly, Valentine’s Day is now widely celebrated in many parts of Asia, such as Singapore, China and South Korea. This has largely been achieved not through religious tradition, but through marketing and commercialisation, and it is of little surprise that Asians tend to spend far more on average when it comes to Valentine’s gifts than anywhere else.

Japan has developed yet another variation on the theme of Valentine’s Day, with women being expected to give chocolates to all of the men they work with. The favour is then returned a month later with another variation of Valentine’s Day being celebrated on March 14th, though this time it is the turn of the men to give chocolate to all of the women who gave them chocolate the previous month. More recently chocolate has been replaced with other less unhealthy alternatives, such as jewellery and even lingerie.

Another month later, on April 14th, a third variation is to be witnessed in South Korea, where a similar tradition to Japan has taken place in February and March, but in April anyone was unlucky enough not to receive anything in either February or March goes to a restaurant to eat Chinese black noodles, as a way of mourning their single status! South Korea is perhaps where the concept of Valentines has been embraced most widely, with the 14th of every month of the year having some love related significance.

So from pagan feast, to a religious celebration of a Christian martyr, to an international day when love and friendship are celebrated in style, Valentine’s Day reminds us that spring is just around the corner, good things are starting to happen, the world is becoming a warmer place, and romantic ideas blossom as optimistically as the cherry trees under which misty eyed lovers ponder their fortunes. Love may not make the world go round, but it at least makes the journey more worthwhile.

Joust was by far one of the simplest and easiest games to master; you had to simply learn to knock other players from their flying ostrich and avoid falling into a lava pit yourself. The challenges progressed as you knocked more opponents down and more land disappeared forcing you to keep your ostrich in the air ever longer while fighting an onslaught of ever more cunning opponents.

Of course your skills increase, as the land changes locations and the opponents start arriving more frequently and even faster than ever before. You had both single and two player mode which made it fun to play as a team versus just against one another.

Normally when in two player mode it was important to keep your partner alive as well, as they helped in those moments against overwhelming odds. Overall the initial rating was very simple for the game, but as things increased you had better be ready for a challenge. The opponents which normally started at two would increase in number and their level of aggressiveness. I don't know of many people who ever finished the game (actually completed the game), everyone got finished at some point though. You did earn extra lives as you completed certain levels and as you gathered bonus material.

You did need to avoid the creatures other than the knights as they would finish off both you and the opponents. Overall it was a lot of fun, and was often a good way to waste a little money on a Saturday afternoon. It gave you a place to hang out with your friends and play games in either single or two player mode.

when i play assassin's creed 2 on my xbox 360 it runs extremley loud is this normal?

and there is nothing wrong with my xbox because i put in cod mw2 and it ran fine. Is there something wrong with the disc or is it just how assassin's creed 2 runs???

Assassin's Creed II is a very large game with a lot of digital data. Most all RPG styled video games have more data stored on the disk than FPS. So, because there is more data the Xbox 360 has to work harder to spit out all of the images on the screen in the correct fashion. The more that is happening at a single moment, then it's harder to run than less action in the same scene.

The Xbox is a sixth-generation video game console produced by Microsoft Corporation. Would something from District 9 be possible ever?

In district 9 a weird substance is absorbed into the main characters body that changes his DNA and transforms him into an alien, would that ever be a possibility with modern science? Could someones DNA be transformed, and their appearance the same as the new DNA?

Possible or plausible? I think most scientists would not want to say it is absolutely impossible, but would agree that it is highly, highly unlikely. There's a great Carl Sagan quote about human-alien hybrids, which are popular in science fiction, "I think the chance of a man mating with a petunia is much greater than the chance of him being able to mate, much less produce offspring, with an inhabitant of another planet." District 9 doesn't deal with reproduction, but I think the same basic principle applies. His point is that humans are much, much more closely related to other organisms on earth than we are likely to be to any alien species. Although they seem totally different from us, we share a huge percentage of our genes with green plants, and even more with mushrooms, and still more with mice. It's easier to imagine a human hybrid with one of these creatures than with something from outer space, even if it walks and has language and displays some other seemingly human features.

Assuming that aliens even use DNA and not some other genetic code, the likelihood that it would be compatible with our own genome is very low. Even if it were compatible, most foreign DNA would be instantly recognized and destroyed by our body's defenses before it had much of a chance to integrate into our genome. Of course, there are viruses like HIV that do integrate into our genomes and change the way our cells behave, so it's not totally without biological plausibility. Assuming the new DNA did get past our initial defenses, I would think that the transformation would illicit an immune response similar to tissue rejection that occurs when people have organ transplants. The "prawn" tissue would have alien proteins and their membranes would probably even have different lipid constituents, and these would set off a major immune response.

D-9 never explains the mechanism, but presumably the liquid contains alien DNA and enzymes to cause the transformation. I'm actually glad they didn't try to explain it, because I loved the movie and I think this is a case where the more you try to rationalize it based on actual biology, the more ridiculous it becomes. Still, it is fun to think about these things. If I had to come up with an explanation, I would say the best way to do it would be to have some sort of virus that could infect human cells and insert alien DNA into our genomes. Enzymes produced by the alien DNA could suppress expression of human genes while upregulating more alien genes, allowing the transformation to take place.

how can i get pst the eating part on the simpsons game on ps2 with homer?

i am stuck on the eating part of the simpsons game on ps2 how do i get onto the next level.or does anyone know of a supercheat that access all levels.

Hello here's the walkthrough for that level, hope it helps =)

Objective #1: Get Homer into Australia.

Start by doing what you're supposed to be doing and grab some of the food lying
around in the first area (China, it seems). Once the power meter is full you're
good to go up the ramp and Homerball dash over the wall and into Australia.

- Objective #2: Take Homer to Mexico.

Simply roll through the archway underneath the brick wall.

- Objective #3: Smash the super taco.

Activate Homerball and slam into the large taco in front of the billboard
with the smiling woman on it. This will open the way to Germany.

- Objective #4: Open the gate and take Homer into Scotland.

Progress through Germany and enter the small France area on the left. Switch
to Bart and jump onto the wooden platform at the end of the path, then use the
umbrellas to get to the updraft coming out of the large beer barrel tap. Glide
to the roof of the beige building and zipline across to the Eiffel Tower.

Stand on the platform at the front end of the tower and push the red button
(always a red button) to get to the top. Now you can jump off and glide all
the way to the Scottish flag on the wall below. Pull the nearby lever to lower
the gate for Homer.

- Objective #5: Open the gate and take Homer into Italy.

Another day, another gate to open. Use Homerball and slam into the Stonehenge
boulders near the first gate. Use them to reach the large bagpipe at the end,
which is just sitting there waiting to get slammed on. Once you do, updrafts
will appear from the pipes. As Bartman might say (well, he might've back in
the 90s): it's glidin' time, man! Glide to the next wall and pull another lever
to open the second gate.

- Objective #6: Smash the super meatball.

Switch back to Homer and use Homerball to destroy the large meatball at the
top of the fork ramp.

- Objective #7: Open the gate and take Homer into America.

Take Bart over the coliseum and onto the bridge. You should see some green
vines growing up along the last bridge support on the right. Climb those vines
to get to the top with a clear view of America just ahead. Glide inside there
and use the ladder to reach the lever next to the gate. Pull 'er down to
finally get Homer to his greatest challenge yet... in this eating contest.

- Objective #8: Destroy the Statue of Liberty and smash the super burger.

Boss: Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty doesn't really fight back since she's on defense the
whole time. Use Homerball to smash the coin platform and lower the shield of
dancing girls from around the Statue. That'll be the chance you need to smash
into the crack in her mid section. After the first hit she'll start to rotate,
but all that means is you'll need to time your smash for the right moment.

After three smashes the Statue will collapse and drop the super burger. Time
to do what gigantic fat men do... No, smartass, I didn't mean have heart
attacks! G
