If you think about the total movie experience, you are probably expecting more than a couple of laughs from a star who's grown tired of the same old role. Fortunately, the movies coming from Hollywood and around the world are not just relying on the old formulas to get by. The market in thrillers is definitely back, making modern pictures once again the place for chills and nerve-wracking plot twists. If you want to see a first-rate thriller, check out these five HD films on satellite TV.
1. Tell No One. The French take on the American thriller has traditionally yielded excellent results and Tell No One is the latest in this genre. A doctor's wife, known to be dead for years by the time the action takes place, chooses to send a message to her husband which would seem to prove she is alive. Could any of the developments be explained otherwise? As usual, the path to the truth for the doctor/husband will not go through the official channels, as police and criminals alike seem to be in on a disturbing plot. Watch one of the best thrillers in years on HBO.
2. No Country For Old Men. In terms of suspense and the gut-wrenching moments thriller fans love, the Coen Brothers did their share of giving the audience what they want. No number of Oscars was necessary to justify the precise filmmaking and careful execution by cast and crew alike. Few killers have ever looked as silly yet been so intimidating as Javier Bardem, while Josh Brolin's character is the man every moviegoer can root for. See this modern classic in HD on Starz.
3. State of Play. There is nothing like military industrial complex assassins to get the blood chilled and State of Play has one of the most haunting in recent memory. On top of that, following Russell Crowe's journalist character as he snoops around the Beltway is simply waiting for something awful to happen. Check out this spine-tingling new thriller on HBO.
4. Oldboy. Korean director Park Chan-Wook made some revenge pictures earlier on in his career, but those seemed like minor warm-ups for this blowout film. With the energy of a young Scorsese and a plot worthy of a Hitchcock scorcher, this film will shatter your expectations and make all of your guesses at the denouement seem foolish. 5. Body Heat. In many ways the movie that passed the torch from the thrillers of old to the modern, Body Heat remains one of the great neo-noir pictures. See Kathleen Turner at her most stunning and William Hurt in an excellent role as the man who believes in a very, very bad woman. Body Heat also took up the old tradition of comic interludes common in early film noirs, making laughs a key part of a very solid picture. Check out satellite TV movie networks for show times.

This game is a first person game, and as it came out before Quake, was the first game with free look. It has been compared to Quake (as has its sequel SkyNet). It has an evolving story and missions with a military feel, including briefings in which you can talk to several people and gather info, to the way the missions play out. There are 17 different weapons available.
The game requires you to look that the compass in the interface, to make sure you are going the right way. It also has missions where you have to fly a plane or drive a car.

The Mummy series has never been very impressive to me, The First in 1999 and the first sequel, the Mummy returns in 2001, did not leave any good impressions in my head. All I know is they were not as good as expected. The second sequel in 2008, The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor can be very entertaining, not to mention the involvement of the legendary action star Jet Li, the graphic is definitely better than the previous two.
The Mummy is always the combination of comedy, action, and science fiction as well as mystical story. However, I never think the comedy is necessary as it is not funny at all. In the The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, only Jet Li did a good job and Frasier comes second because his effort to play funny does not yield any results.
The story is classic. Rick O'Connell explores again and this time to China, into the frigid Himalayas, to fight the Emperor Han. Accompanied by his wife Evelyn, her wife's brother Jonathan, and Son Alex played by Maria Bello, John Hannah, and Luke Ford respectively, he must stop a 2,000 years old cursed Mummy awaken who will turns the world into his merciless and unending service. Wait! Where is Rachel Weisz?
According to rumor, she was not happy with the script and screenplay, she won't play her role anymore if there is no significant change, which means there is really no significant change.
If you have watched both of the Mummies, you should watch the third. The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is absolutely far better than both of its previous version. This blending of Hollywood stars and Asian stars are expected to gain more attention in Asian, which could be a turning point in the earning compared to the previous two.
You might want to shift your expectation to see a funny action movie to a serious action movie played by Jet Li, with this shift you might enjoy the movie better. Seriously, what is funny about the Mummy 3? Well, nothing is funny but action is very good.
This is however a good movie for the weekend, paying the money for ticket is fine but not paying your money to buy the DVD for your collection, I suppose. You would want to spend your money on the Dark Knight DVD, that you can watch over and over again but still impressed by the Joker, Mr. Heath Ledger.

Backpacking Western Sichuan: China's Other Tibet
My pretty princess and I started our trip at Jiayuguan, a frontier town featuring a rebuilt portion of the Great Wall, the westernmost section of it to be exact. Jiayuguan was China's traditional boundary. Beyond the wall and the large fortress lay Xinjiang, Tibet and the ever changing borders of the western frontier..
Jiayuguan is a fairly dirty, sleepy little town with only the Great Wall and Jiayuguan Fort to entertain tourists. A glacier is also within sight from the fort, but after talking with a taxi driver, we decided to skip it. Too far, and he wanted a lot of loot for the drive. We hired one taxi for all sites and paid him 100 kuai for the day. This was recommended by Lonely Planet. It was a total mistake.
The sites were all close by precluding any need for wheels. More annoying were his constant calls to my cell phone to hurry us to the next destination so he could get off work. One particularly intimate moment on the Great Wall was interrupted by the sounds of our driver’s car horn echoing off the mountains.
Jiayuguan Fort was overpriced and boring. The only redeeming part about it was that we were there in October, so there were only a couple of red hat tour groups to avoid, rather than having to fight off the masses, as you would have to do in the summer.
.The reconstructed Great Wall was great, but mainly because we were alone on it. That blew my mind! Alone on the Great Wall! When my princess and I found ourselves alone on one of the Seven Great Wonders of the World, we took full advantage of the privacy to share an intimate moment. I hope to do the same on the other six.
From Jiayuguan, we hopped a bus to Dunhuang, the famous site known for its cave paintings. Dunhuang was a cool, livable little town. It is surrounded by desert and dunes. There are a couple of Western restaurants, the Friendship Café was good, serving the usual backpacker staples: banana pancakes, French fries and the likes.
We were able to take the local shuttle to the caves. It stops down the street from the Western restaurants. It's much cheaper than taking a taxi. The Dunhuang Caves were worth the hefty price of admission, 150 RMB, but that comes with a helpful English translator.
Only some of the caves are open at any given time. For the most famous caves, like the tantric cave, which are closed, the museum next to the caves offers replicas of the caves paintings for your viewing pleasure. I thought this would mean a replica of what the caves might have looked like a thousand years ago, before erosion and aging dulled the colors and cracked the walls, but astoundingly that ain’t the case. The replicas were actual replicas. Replicating the cracks, water and air damage, faded colors and all. The caves were remarkable, and offer insight into the lives of the Buddhist monks that painted them long ago.
After the caves, we rented bikes from the Friendship Café and rode out to the Crescent Moon Lake dune, an unremarkable oasis that has been transformed into a red-hat-tourist-camel-riding carnival. We decided to skip the entrance fee and hop a fence to sit on the dune. From the top of the dune we could watch all the manic Chinese tourists enjoying a camel ride adventure with 50 of their best friends and colleagues.
From Dunhuang, we hopped an overnight bus to Golmud. The ride was terrifying, flying over a steep, winding, frozen mountain pass at mach speed. Golmud is the last stop in Qinghai for the train to Lhasa. It's a dirty industrial and agricultural city without much besides a backdrop of crazy snow-clad mountains.
In Golmud, we tried to secure permits to Tibet, which we discovered would be impossible without a letter from my company in Shanghai saying that I was not a reporter or a separatist. So, we decided to visit the parts of Tibet that you don't need a permit to visit: namely Qinghai and northern Sichuan—areas of China on the Tibetan plateau, historically and culturally Tibetan, but different provinces on the map.
We started with Xining, the capital of Qinghai. Xining is quaint and small for a "big" city, with some pollution, friendly country folk and many minorities among them like Tibetans, Hui and Salas. Xining is pretty modern, with its share of malls and McDonalds, but it had a relaxing feel to it. There are big city comforts, like pizza, without the big city pace.
Not much to see in Xining. Qinghai Lake is a few short bus rides away, and the Kumbum Monastery is a few kilometers outside of town. The Dalai Lama was born just outside of Xining, although I'm sure his house has been razed to discourage pilgrims and those seeking autonomy.
From Xining, we went to Tongren (Repkong in Tibetan) and fell in love with the place . The goodness began right when we got there. The hotel we found for 30 RMB a night did not require a deposit or advanced payment. We could pay when we checked out. Amazing! For travelers grown weary of being swindled by the Chinese, Tibetan honesty, hospitality and laid back culture is a welcoming reprieve.
Tongren is an amazing little secret. This small town is the art capital of the Tibetan Kingdom. There are several temples— the Upper and Lower temples, Long Dai Temple, and Gomar Monastery. The coolest thing to do around town is check out the art: sculpture and embroidery, especially the Thangkas, they're the dopest you'll see anywhere.
Thangka painting is everywhere in Tongren. Monks and laymen both paint full time. In the neighborhood across from the Lower Temple, every man is a Thangka painter. Thangka painting is a blue collar art form. It takes time to develop your skill and patience. It requires a great deal of experience and technical skill and relies less on creativity. Artists can work 10-12 hours a day for 6 months or more to complete a single painting, slowly and meticulously creating the composition one fine line the width of a single cat hair at a time.
The quality of Thangkas is easy to judge and one can become a connoisseur in an afternoon. It's simple: the smaller the lines and greater the detail, the better the quality. The Thangka reveals the artist's level of patience. Like monks meditating, the novice will often loose his concentration and peek at his watch. The master never wavers, sitting, concentrating and painting—seemingly without end.
Being able to see the difference in degrees of Thangka quality is especially useful because some of less scrupulous monks sell cheaper rip-off Thangkas from Nepal. The Nepali ones are cheaper and of inferior quality (i.e. the brushstrokes are bigger). The original Tongren produced Thangkas are affordable. I was surprised to find that on my meager backpacker's budget, I could afford a world class work of art.
..Things to do in Tongren besides looking at Thangkas: eating breakfast at the Lower Temple. Every morning the local townsfolk get together with the monks and eat hard Tibetan bread and yak butter tea at the temple. It's quite an experience. And if you ask, or are pushed by a happy monk, you can go inside the milk butter tea making room to see a giant vat with lots of yak fluid. The monks chant before breakfast. They create a wild sound with their throats. It sounds like they are speaking the language of earthquakes and floods.
To get to the temple or anywhere outside of the town center, take the minivans, (mian bao che). The minivans are parked just up the street from the bus stop. It costs 1.5 RMB to get to the temple (15 RMB by taxi). To return to town, hail a passing minivan.
From Tongren, we bounced to Langmusi, a beautiful mountain town on the border of Northern Sichuan and Gansu. Langmusi was a little tough to get to because it was closed to foreigners due to last summer's riots. It is open now so shouldn't be a problem to get to. If you are having trouble getting through, here's how to get around it.
First go to one of the crappy bus transferring towns (Hezuo from Qinghaior, Ruoerge from Sichuan) and stay the night. Go to the bus station first thing in the morning to check departure times. Try to buy a ticket. They won't sell you one because it's closed to foreigners, but, its worth a shot. Board the bus without a ticket. Once the bus leaves, buy a ticket while on board. That's it. Don't worry, they know what you're doing and don't care. You'll be there in a few hours..
For Langmusi, Lonely Planet was surprisingly spot on. But that's due more to the simplicity of Langmusi than any super-sleuthing on Lonely Planet's behalf. But we stayed at the Langmusi Bingguan and it was great. Nice people, cheap price, comfortable and clean.
Langmusi is a Tibetan town with horseback riding, sky burials, and a wild man named Tashi that takes people on overnight tours of a Tibetan village (you stay at his mom's house). Tashi's tour comes highly recommended. It was kind of hard travel to get there, but worth it for all the beautiful mountain loveliness. Tashi's friends were a lot of fun if a little reckless. The 15-year-old drunkard who howled at the moon all night was particularly endearing.
Horseback riding was very cool but a bit unfortunate. There was only one company in town that offered horseback riding treks, a Han Chinese couple that rented Tibetan guides and horses. The company charged a high fee, over 200 RMB a day. I asked the Tibetan tour guide how much he made out of that. It wasn't much.
.A better plan for horseback riding is to talk to Leesha at Leesha's Café, a great friendly place for Western food in the middle of town. She has plenty of Tibetan friends with horses that could take you on a trekking adventure—an under the table trekking adventure. Horse riding is highly recommended. It's beautiful out in the country and seeing a little of what nomad life is like is amazing. The air and water is clean, and among the surprising things I saw (there were a few) was a boy of no more than 15 dwarfed by the giant yak on which he was galloping along bareback. It's a different world...

Yeah, I really like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks movies, like "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless In Seattle." Those are the really cozy movies for like the morning...and if it starts raining really hard and thundering outside by the evening, maybe you could pop in the black and white version of Frankenstien or Dracula =]

The "Dr. Dolittle" trilogy, released fairly recently, also stars pets in some important roles. In these movies, Eddie Murphy plays a scientist who can hear animals talk. The animals look up to him for help, but the doctor isn't always thrilled with their questions.
Pets often play the role of a companion to the protagonist in a movie. Milo in "The Mask" is a good example of this kind of role. He plays Jim Carrey's companion and friend, and even helps defeat the antagonists of the movie.
Pets have played companionship roles in films for quite some time now. The 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz" features Toto, a dog who aids the protagonist Dorothy in her adventures in trying to make it back to Kansas.
The recent film "Garfield" used computer-generated graphics to create an animated version of the popular comic strip cat. These film effects are pushing the boundaries of film every year, and you can bet that computer-generated pets will be receiving attention. It's fun to watch these movie pets as we hear the celebrity voice actors who bring them to life and give them personality.

On Tuesday, December 1st, Frederick "Fritz" Henderson, the man charged with steering America's largest car maker away from the precipice of financial disaster, decided to call it quits. Stepping in to replace Rick Wagoneer as the beleaguered auto maker's CEO during the restructuring phase, Henderson was quoted as saying, "over the next 60 days, we will work around the clock, with all parties, to meet the aggressive requirements that have been set by the Task Force, and to make the fundamental and lasting changes necessary to reinvent GM for the long-term."
Perhaps Mr. Henderson understood the daunting task and sheer physical toll the restructuring phase would demand on the new CEO. 244 days after his appointment he resigned. While some sources close to the company commend Fritz's herculean efforts during his short stint, the company is left standing in a financial hurricane amidst a relatively barren US auto market. Given the current scenario, many stake holders are beginning to wonder how GM will find the right captain to weather the storm. Here is breakdown of the major obstacles and necessary strategies to help land the right leader.
Uncle Sam
With a 60% stake in GM, the Government is by far the biggest stockholder. Given the recent public debacle of the AIG bonus scandal, it is highly unlikely that the new CEO of GM will be offered a pay scale anywhere close to the private sector. So how does a company that requires the absolute highest levels of steely resilience and business intellect in their new CEO compete with the deep pockets of the private sector? The new CEO of GM will have to be both mentally and emotionally invested in the company. A major requirement for GM's leadership position should include a deep sense of sympathy for the US auto market and an unwavering resolve to get off the matt at nearly all costs. Essentially we are looking for the Rocky Balboa of CEO's.
Psychology
In retrospect, perhaps Fritz Henderson was the right man for the interim job. Maybe he never intended to see the company through the long and arduous trek back to profitability, but rather simply guide them through the tough initial transition out of bankruptcy. GM needs a marathon runner. GM needs someone with nerves of steel; someone who performs best under pressure and someone who enjoys a monumental challenge. Raising GM from the dead may not be the same as putting a man on the moon, but in economic terms it is certainly in the same ballpark. The new CEO must thrive on high stakes decision making.
Organization
With the public holding a major stake in the company, the CEO search will inevitable become the subject of public domain. The process of recruiting leaders requires internal discussion and the tweezing apart of the subtle differences in character, personality, experience and overall psychology of each candidate. While the American people must be satisfied with their investment, the last thing that GM needs is a corporate version of American Idol. Organization, communication, feedback and collaboration among the decision makers selecting the new CEO are critical for the long-term success of the company. This group should go out of their way to ensure the maximum level of cooperation. From boosting internal collaboration and feedback with special hiring software to working with a PR team to ensure public satisfaction with the overall process, the selection team has their work cut out for them.
Given the obvious challenges associated with finding a new leader for General Motors, there are several advantage that GM has going forward. Despite the fact that government ownership makes CEO pay scales uncompetitive, having Uncle Sam as your backer is like having Don Corleone invest in your olive oil company. Investors, competitors and even prospective car buyers know that there is an underlying level of financial insurance at least for the time being. GM is also on the verge of producing a new breed of electric cars, like the Chevy Volt, that could potentially y revitalize the company and reposition them as a technological leader in the auto industry. Last but not least, there is a still a fighting spirit in this country, in the auto industry and in America's deep history with our manufacturing base that may offer an intangible but powerful ally as GM's new CEO takes the wheel on the bumpy road to recovery.

Let's face it; a Jack Black film is hardly going to be unpredictable. One can imagine the pitch: loveable overweight loser (Black) falls for unobtainable girl, but (and here's the twist boys and girls) how about this time we make him a caveman (how apt) who, with his best friend, goes on a quest that shakes up the ancient biblical world. Oh and we have to have at least one scene where he scats and he should be moving his eyebrows around constantly, the kids will expect it... hilarity ensues.
Don't get me wrong, I like a stupid funny movie as much as the next person and I did a guffaw during this one. But when you can see a joke coming (girl lifts arm to reveal hairy armpit - HILARIOUS...for 1961) it's not so funny. Fortunately on this venture Black has hooked up with Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno) as his sidekick while David Cross (Arrested Development, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Good Job!) delivers a scarily convincing portrayal as the psychopathic murderer Cain.
All in all Year One is quite amusing, following the journeys of best friends Zed (Black - the incompetent hunter) and Oh (Cera - the naive gatherer) after Zed eats forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge and they are kicked out of their caveman village. The duo decides to go on a quest to start their own awesome tribe when they stumble into Biblical times. As well as Cross's Cain, they meet a slew of other characters a long the way, including that McLovin' guy from Superbad (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) as Isaac, son of the Jewish leader Abraham (Hank Azaria).
As one would expect, the film does lean towards old school stereotypes (it was, after all written and directed by Harold Ramis, co-writer of Animal House and Meatballs). This does bring it down a bit. You would think that in this day and age that no one in their right mind would write a 'sleazy mincing gay guy' character (Oliver Platt as the High Priest) and deem it comedy gold.
